International Policy Network uděluje každý rok Bastiat Prize for Journalism, jejímž účelem je
to encourage and reward writers whose published works promote free markets and free societies, and their supporting institutions.
Tato cena je každoročně udělována novinářům či publicistům z celého světa, kteří zveřejnili v daném časovém období kvalitní články na podporu základních institucí svobodné společnosti - svobody projevu, vlastnických práv, vlády zákona, svobodného trhu a "sound science".
The Bastiat Prize for Journalism, first held in 2002, is inspired by the 19th century French philosopher Frédéric Bastiat and his compelling belief in free trade and the defence of liberty. Bastiat's brilliant use of satire enabled him to turn even the most complex of economic issues into a tale to which the average person could relate. In keeping with this legacy, prize entries are judged according to the intellectual content of each article, the persuasiveness of the language used and the type of publication in which they appeared.
Letošním vítězem Bastiatovy ceny byl dnes v noci slavnostně vyhlášen Robert Guest, ("Africa Editor of The Economist magazine" a autor knihy The Shackled Continent (2004).
“I am delighted to have won the Bastiat Prize” said Guest. “To my mind, no part of the world shows more clearly than Africa the need for economic liberty and the rule of law. Their absence in so many African countries keeps the continent needlessly poor, and that's something journalists have to keep shouting about.”
Robert Guest obdržel Bastiatovu cenu za článek v The Economist z roku 2003, v němž se zaměřil na přehled ekonomické a sociální situace v afrických zemích a na příčiny tohoto stavu (online si lze přečíst jeho SURVEY: SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA. First get the basics right).
Mimochodem, v komisi, která o udělení Bastiatovy ceny za rok 2004 rozhodla, zasedl i Milton Friedman a Hernando de Soto.
